JOSEPH WHITE for GEIGER TEXTILES

Joseph White is the Director of Workplace Futures and Insight at Herman Miller. Joseph is a deep thinker and talented textile designer pushing beyond aesthetics to make a human connection with his work. His recent Taconic Collection for Geiger Textiles launched at Neocon 2019 to rave reviews. We are proud to say that he attended our LOVE GOOD COLOR Workshop twice, once in Chicago and again at Herman Miller, in Holland MI.

PROJECT CHALLENGE:
This project is a new collection of upholstery textiles commissioned by Geiger Textiles. Based on handwoven patterns that I created on my loom, it is designed and manufactured for use in commercial, residential, and hospitality applications. The main color challenge was to ensure the collection stands on its own with a uniquely expressive palette while complementing and subtly expanding the range of Geiger's existing textile portfolio and well-established point of view on color.

The new collection is composed of five patterns with 52 unique colorways. Wool raised, dyed and spun in the United States and pre-consumer recycled cotton are the primary fibers, with rayon, nylon and recycled polyester serving as supplements.

COLOR SOLUTION:
The primary fibers are presented in a set of rich and grounded hues from the warm and cool ends of the spectrum. These core colors were pulled directly from the existing textile portfolio and then coordinated across all of the patterns in the new collection. Bright and expressive hues were then selected to accentuate the core colors and expand the reach of the palette. Specifically, tints and shades of goldenrod, mossy green, coral and fuchsia-purple were added. The LOVE GOOD COLOR system was helpful in identifying the precise colors to draw from the existing textile portfolio, ensuring the flexibility to coordinate with the expanded color range.

RESULTS:
By combining color in this way the new collection carries its own point of view while creating a bridge to the existing portfolio and expanding the overall potential for color expression. The result is a textile collection that feels natural, equally at home in settings that range from relaxed residential to hard-working office and luxurious hospitality.
